West Ashley Republicans picked businessman Brantley Moody as their candidate for Charleston County Council’s District 7 seat, while Democrat Ruth Jordan won her primary race for the same seat, according to unofficial results.

The two will meet on the Nov. 8 ballot to see which one will fill the seat currently held by Councilwoman Colleen Condon, who is not seeking a new term.

Meanwhile, Berkeley County Republicans gave incumbent Ken Gunn a big boost toward a new term. He defeated challenger Elaine Barnett by more than a 2-1 margin and faces no Democrat in the fall.

Their primary race took an interesting twist when Sheriff Duane Lewis asked the State Law Enforcement Division to investigate Barnett’s claims that a local lawmaker offered her a county position in exchange for her withdrawal from the race.

In Charleston County, Moody racked up about 62 percent of the vote — enough to win outright. Former Charleston County GOP Chair John Steinberger, Chris Cannon, and Paul Gangarosa received 23, 11 and 4 percent, respectively.
